Quick! What’s your gut reaction in response to hearing the word “yoga”? Ok, whatever your reaction was, drop it, let it go, put it down for now and guess what? You just did yoga! The conception of So You Think You Can Yoga?® stems from the plethora of misconceptions I hear from my students, dancers, athletes and from everyday people. We think of ourselves as being a certain way…flexible, stiff and so on and because we tend to operate from this habitual false sense of perception, we shoot ourselves in the foot by curtailing our physical, mental and spiritual development. Stepping away from our habitual patterns opens up new possibilities and lends itself to a genuine re-examination into how we move, think, live. So get out of your own way and see that you indeed can yoga! So You Think You Can Yoga?® emphasizes the importance of purpose and intention behind movement. When we move, whether we are conscious of it or not, we tell a story. The way we move is not just a means for getting from here to there or of doing this or that; it is the way we communicate with the world, ourselves and something beyond ourselves. So You Think You Can Yoga?® encourages the vinyasa method of linking movement with breath along with ideokinesis or imagined movement to facilitate higher levels of movement efficiency while utilizing slower more purposeful movement patterns. All of us learn to walk before we can run as children and it is important to return to this fundamental principle whether it is in your yoga practice or in life. Remember what your initial reaction was to the question So You Think You Can Yoga?® and use that as a launching pad to step out of your own way and get moving. Diligence and time will reveal physical changes you never thought you were capable of. When we become comfortable with physical change, we are more receptive and this receptivity will slowly materialize into tremendous potential for mental and spiritual liberation.
